I've always thought that if PC games were going to use the Hollywood paradigm, then they should also feature a
Hollywood-quality soundtrack. I mean, most of the games I play, the background music is the first thing I shut off;
not so with this score. It's first-rate, nicely varied in terms of style and texture, and the recorded sound is
smashing.

Quest for Golry V is an adventure role-playing computer game and this CD not only contains the music written for
the game, but a CD-ROM sneak preview of the game itself. As you might expect for an action game, much of
Chance Thomas’ score is bold and powerful. The ‘Overture’ is a majectic piece (and) it’s march-like qualities
generate a feeling of splendour. Many of the subsequent tracks are more gentle, melodic and thoughtful. There
are none of the hypnotic repeated phrases that I tend to associate with computer games, but a collection of well
composed and interesting compositions. The styles vary considerably, for example the cue ‘Silmarian
Meanderings’ has a distinct dreamy Spanish feel, while ‘Frolic at Gnome Ann’s Land Inn’ could be set in France.
Much of the action sequences are heavy on the percussion and are reminiscent of refined Zimmer with a touch of
Goldsmith. Overall I was surprised that I enjoyed this score so much and would recommend it to anyone whom
generally enjoys noisy, adventurous scores.
